Email: Sanitized for Your Protection

The software regularly detects and quarantines 25 to 50 messages per day carrying known viruses, preventing our users' computers from being infected with the ExploreZip, I Love You, SirCam Worm and Pretty Park viruses, among other forms of malicious code.

The interception is performed in two ways. First, the software filters out known viruses and deceptively named files, quarantining them and notifying both us and the recipient, and second, by renaming possibly dangerous attachments to prevent their accidental execution. What appears in Outlook or other email programs as "yourfile.xls" may actually be a Visual Basic script named "yourfile.xls.vbs", intended to run destructive commands when you double-click on it. Such files will not be allowed as far as your computer. If the file really is named "yourfile.xls", the security program will label the resulting file as "defanged" -- our example file might become "yourfile.17325DEFANGED-xls". This change will prevent any unintentional execution of the file, and thus thwart any malicious code that might be included.

The renaming of the file does not in any way change the contents of that file; it merely prevents unauthorized execution. If the new name of the file shows no unusual features, and is expected from a trusted source, you may wish to view the attachment.

To view a defanged attachment:

1. Right-click once on the name of the attachment
2. Select the "Save As" option from the list
3. If you the file is named, for example, "anotherfile.15367DEFANGED-doc", save it to your hard drive as "anotherfile.doc".
4. Open the saved file in the appropriate program.

Considering the amount of malicious code already prevented from inconveniencing our users, we think you'll agree that this security is a great benefit, and we hope it will add to your peace of mind.

UIA users that receive Email to their UIA Email addresses [including @aviastar.net, @comstocknet.com, @csnsys.com, @cyberg8t.com, @eee.org, @empirenet.com, @genesisnetwork.net, @gnww.net, @highways.net, @mscomm.com, @wrightwood.net] are the only emails that are sanitized. Other Email addresses, such as Web-Based Email [example: @hotmail.com, @yahoo.com] are not covered by our Email Security measures and will not be sanitized unless you have that [hotmail, yahoo, etc.] Email forwarded, and open it from your UIA Email address.
