How
to Use Your Web Space With Your UIA Account

Publishing Your
Web
Page
|
Once
you have created your web page, you will need to make it available
for the rest of the world to see. This requires that you upload
it to your UIA web space. All standard dial-up accounts
come
with 5MB of web space. Additional web space is available
for
purchase (please contact UIA for details).
Also,
every time you make changes to your web page, you need to
upload it again so that others can see the changes as well.
Remember, the page will only be as current as the last time
it was uploaded to your web space.
Uploading
your web page can be done using any standard FTP program.
While UIA recommends using CuteFTP or WS_FTP (or Fetch for
Macintosh), there are probably a hundred other FTP programs
that will work just as well. These programs can be downloaded
from the Internet at little or no charge from their respective
manufacturers.

|
To
connect to your space
- When
you start CuteFTP you will see the FTP Site Manager window.
The left frame of this window will show you a list of folders,
in which you will see CuteFTP Wizard Sites. Click
this folder once to select it.
- In
the right-hand pane, select UIA.
- Click
Connect. Cute FTP will now connect to your UIA FTP
space.
When you
have connected to your FTP space you will see the contents
of your directory. Initially, this folder should be blank.
The next
time you start CuteFTP, select UIA from the right-hand frame
and click Connect.
|
| How
to access the FTP Site Manager
Once you
connect to a site, the FTP Site Manager disappears. To access
it again, choose Site Manager from the File
menu, or press your F4 key.
How
to add a site to CuteFTP's Site Manager

to configure the location and login information for each site.
After you have configured a site, its information will remain
in the Site Manager for quick access at a later time.
- Click
the Add Site button. An Add Host dialogue
box will appear.
- Enter
the following information:
| Site
label: |

all other fields as they are.
- Click
OK to return to the FTP Site Manager window.
- The
right-hand frame will now show an entry named what you entered
into the Site Label field. Select this entry and
click Connect.
How
to browse an FTP site
Once you
have connected to an FTP site, you will need to navigate through
that site in order to find the files you wish to download.
CuteFTP
works and looks somewhat like Windows Explorer:
- The
top frame contains the commands you have sent to the FTP
site and the results of those commands. It will also show
you if there has been an error when you send a command.
- The
middle-right frame of CuteFTP contains a list of the files
and directories available on the site to which you have
connected.
- The
middle-left frame shows the contents of your PC's hard drive.
- The
bottom frame shows the progress of your uploads and downloads.
Navigation
works the same for both the lower-left (your PC) and lower-right
(the remote FTP) frames:
- To
see the contents of a directory, double-click it.
- To
go up one directory, click the "folderup" icon
at the top of the lower-right frame.
- Next
to the "folder up" icon is a drop-down menu. From
here you can jump to any directory you have opened during
the session.
- To
enter the location (path) of a directory, choose Change
Directory from the Commands menu, enter the location of
the directory, and click OK.
|
|
How
to download a file
After navigating
to a directory in the middle-right frame that contains a file you
want to download, downloading this file to your hard drive can be
done in several ways.
Verify that
the directory to which you want to save the file is showing in the
middle-left frame, then use one of the following methods to download
the file:
- Choose Download
from the Commands menu.
- Press CTRL+PAGE
DOWN on your keyboard.
- Drag the
file from the middle-right frame to the middle-left frame.
- Double-click
the file.
- The row of
icons near the top of the CuteFTP window contains two arrows,
one pointing up and one pointing down. Click the arrow pointing
down to transfer the file to your PC.
How
to upload a file
After navigating
to a directory in the middle-left frame that contains a file you
want to upload, uploading the file to the remote server can be done
in several ways. These methods are similar
to those used to download
files.
First, verify
that the directory in which you want to save the file is showing
in the middle-right
frame. Then use one of the following methods
to upload the file:
- Choose Upload
from the Commands menu.
- Press CTRL+PAGE
UP on your keyboard.
- Drag the
file from the middle-left frame to the middle-right frame.
- Double-click
the file you want to upload.
- The row of
icons near the top of the CuteFTP window contains two arrows,
one pointing up and one point down. Click the arrow pointing up
to transfer the file to the remote FTP site.

Using
WS_FTP LE With Your UIA Account
How
to Access Your Web Directories Using WS_FTP
Before you
can upload, download, or change the contents of your Web directories,
you must establish an FTP connection to UIAs FTP server. You
must also have an active connection to the Internet to access UIA's
FTP server.
- Open WS_FTP.
- Click Connect.
The Session Profile window appears.
- In the Host
Name field, type members.uia.net. In the User ID field, enter
your mailbox name (typically your e-mail address without the @uia.net.)
- In the Password
field, enter your password.
- Leave the
Remote Host field blank.
- Click OK.
- Once you
have completed these steps, the Session Profile window will open,
displaying the contents of your home directory. This should be
blank to begin with.
How
to Make Your HTML Documents Available on the Web using WS_FTP
All UIA service
plans include personal Web and FTP space, for you to upload your
HTML documents, and accompanying files, to your www directory on
UIA's Web server.
To upload your
files:
- Open a connection
to members.uia.net using your username and password. In the lower
left window, select the file your wish to upload.
- Select ASCII
when uploading text files, such as HTML documents. Otherwise,
select Binary.
- Click the
right-arrow button.
- If necessary
rename the file (select the file and click the Rename button).
Use lower-case letters whenever possible. (Remember that our ftp
and web servers are case sensitive.)
Use no
spaces.
Use the extensions:
- .html
or .htm for HTML documents
- .gif
for GIF images
- .jpeg
or .jpg for JPEG images
- .txt
for plain text documents.
To
view your files
Point your
Web browser to the following URL: http://members.uia.net/username/filename
You may notice
that after uploading several files, a visit to your personal website
on the
Internet still shows a blank directory. HTML directory listings
are not available on our servers.
To make a page
come up as the default web page for your site, you must name it
index.html, index.htm, home.html, or home.htm
