1. How do I change my access number?
 

Windows XP

  • Click the Start Button.
  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Go to Network Connections.
  • Right-click on Dial-up.
  • Make change at next pop-up.
  • Close box to complete.

Windows 95/98

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.
  • Right-click on the icon you would use to connect to UIA and click Properties.
  • Down at the bottom should be your current number. Delete it and retype the new number.

Windows NT 4.0

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on Dial-Up Networking icon.
  • To change the existing number replace the number under the Phone Number Preview with the new number you were given.

Windows ME

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.
  • Right-click on the icon you would use to connect to UIA and click Properties.
  • Down at the bottom should be your current number. Delete it and retype the new number.

Windows 2000

  • Right-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Click on Properties.
  • Double-click on the icon you use to connect to UIA.
  • Click on the button labeled Properties.
  • Under Phone Number, remove the existing number and enter the new one.

MacintoshConfigPPP

  • Open the ConfigPPP dialog box.
  • Click on the Config… button.
  • Under Phone num remove the existing number and type in the new one.

OTPPP

  • Open the OTPPP dialog box.
  • In the Number field, remove the existing number and typing in the new one.

FreePPP

  • Open the FreePPP setup window.
  • Click on Account.
  • Select the account you use to connect to UIA.
  • Click on the Edit button.
  • Under Phone Number, remove the existing number and replace it with the new one.

IMAC

  • Click on the Apple Menu.
  • Go down to Control Panels.
  • Slide over and down to Remote Access.
  • Under Number, replace the existing number with the new one.

2. Why does my authentication take so long?
 

The steps below are a suggested way of slightly increasing the speed at which you authenticate with UIA. It is in no way an absolute fix.

Windows 95

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Right-click on the icon used to connect to UIA, and click on Properties.
  • Click on the button labeled Server Types…
  • Uncheck Log on to Network
  • Uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX.
  • Click OK.

Windows 98

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.
  • Right-click on the icon used to connect to UIA, and click on Properties.
  • Click on the tab up at the top that says Server Types.
  • Uncheck Log on to Network
  • Uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX.
  • Click OK.

Windows ME

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Control Panel icon.
  • Click or Double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
  • Right-click on the icon used to connect to UIA, and click on Properties.
  • Click on the Networking tab at the top.
  • Uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX.

Windows NT 4.0

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
  • Click on the button labeled More.
  • Click on Edit entry and modem properties…
  • Click on the Server tab.
  • Uncheck NetBEUI and IPX/SPX.

3. How can I configure my computer to automatically dial?
 

Windows XP

  • Click the Start Button.
  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Go to Internet Options.
  • Click on the Connection tab.
  • Check the box that reads "Always dial my default connection."
  • Click OK.

Windows 95/98/ME/NT4.0/2000

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Control Panel.
  • Double-click on Internet Options.
  • Click on the Connections tab up at the top.
  • In the large box should be listed the connection used to dial up to UIA.
  • Just below it should be three radio buttons, the last of which is Always Dial My Default Connection.
  • Click on the circle next to this option.
  • Click OK.
  • Now your computer will dial automatically whenever you open a web browser or mail client.

IMac

  • Click on the Apple Menu.
  • Click on Control Panels.
  • Slide over and down and click on Remote Access.
  • Click on the Options button.
  • Click on the Protocol tab.
  • Click on the box next to Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications.
  • Now your computer will dial automatically whenever you open a web browser or mail client.

4. How do I find out what type of modem I have?
 

Windows 95/98/ME/NT4.0

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on Control Panel.
  • Double-click on Modems.
  • What is listed in the box is the modem(s) you have installed on your computer.

Windows 2000

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on Control Panel.
  • Double-click on Phone and Modem Options.
  • Click on the Modems tab up at the top.
  • What is listed in the box is the modem(s) you have installed on your computer.

IMac

  • Click on the Apple Menu
  • Click on Control Panels
  • Slide over and down, click on Modem.
  • Under Setup, and next to Modem, is the modem you have installed on your computer.

5. What is the news server for UIA?

 

The news server for UIA is: news.uia.net

You do not need to authenticate to access the news server. The only restriction is that you need to be dialed up with UIA in order to use the news server. You can access this news server through any major news or mail client including Outlook Express.

Outlook Express 5.0

  • In the Display name text box, type your name.
  • Click the Next button.
  • In the E-mail address text box, type your e-mail address (for example, username@uia.net)
  • Click the Next button.
  • In the News (NNTP) server text box, type news.uia.net
  • Click the Next button.
  • Click the Finish button.

6. My company requires me to dial a 9 to get an outside line. How do I configure my computer to do that?
 

Windows XP

  • Click the Start Button.
  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Go to Phone and Modem Options.
  • Choose Dialing Rules.
  • Click on Edit.
  • Select box for "dial 9 first."
  • Enter 9.
  • Click apply
  • Click OK to complete.

Windows 95/98/NT4.0/ME

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Control Panel.
  • Double-click on the Modems icon.
  • Click on the Dialing Properties icon.
  • Under "To access an outside line…" enter in the appropriate number in the appropriate field.

Windows 2000

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Control Panel.
  • Double-click on Phone and Modem Options.
  • Click on the location from which you dial, and then click Edit.
  • Under "When dialing from this location use the following rules:" enter in the appropriate number in the appropriate field.

  • In front of the phone number, enter the number required to dial an outside line followed by a comma.

7. I have call waiting installed on my phone. How do I disable if before dialing out?
 

Note: Before completing the following steps, please be sure to contact your phone company to find out the necessary number(s) that must be entered as each company may have a different procedure.

Windows XP

  • Click the Start Button.
  • Go to Control Panel.
  • Go to Phone and Modem Options.
  • Select your location.
  • Click Edit.
  • Select box that reads "To disable call waiting."
  • Click apply to close.

Windows 95/98/NT4.0/ME

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double-click on the Control Panel.
  • Double-click on the Modems icon.
  • Click on the Dialing Properties icon.

8. How do I configure my mail client?
 

Outlook Express 5.0 - Configure Mail Settings

  • In the Display name text box, type your name.
  • Click the Next button.
  • Select I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use.
  • In the E-mail address text box, type your e-mail address (for example, username@uia.net)
  • Click the Next button.
  • In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server text box, type mail.uia.net.
  • In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server text box, type mail.uia.net.
  • Click the Next button.
  • In the Account name text box, type your username from UIA.
  • In the Password text box, type your password from UIA.
  • Check Remember password, if desired.
  • Click the Next button.
  • Click the Finish button.

Netscape

  • Click the Start button.
  • From the Start menu, point to Netscape Communicator and choose Netscape Navigator.
  • From the menu bar, click Edit and choose Preferences.
  • From Mail & Groups click the Identity link.
  • In the Full Name text box, type your name.
  • In the Email Address text box, type your email address: username@uia.net
  • From Mail & Groups click the Mail Server link.
  • In the Mail server username text box, type your username.
  • In the Outgoing mail [SMTP] server text box, type mail.uia.net
  • In the Incoming Mail Server text box, type mail.uia.net
  • Select POP3 (messages and folders are kept locally, on the hard disk)
  • Click the OK button to close the window.

Eudora Light

  • Click on Tools
  • Click on Options
  • On the left, click Hosts
  • For POP Account, enter your email address
  • For SMTP enter mail.uia.net

Outlook 97/2000/XP

9. Does UIA support WebTV or WAP?
 

ULTIMATE Internet Access, Inc. does support WebTV. We can provide an access number in order to connect; unfortunately we cannot provide any technical support. Please contact your WebTV provider for technical support in regards to the hardware or software installation.

ULTIMATE Internet Access, Inc. does support WAP, Wireless Application Protocol, as long as it uses IP, Internet Protocol. If your WAP hardware supports something other than IP, then we do not provide access. Please consult your documentation for information about what protocol your WAP device supports.

10. Why do I get disconnected from the Internet?
 

This can be caused by many different things. Poor quality phone lines, modem drivers, modem quality/brand, access number and software settings are among some of the leading causes of getting disconnected. The following solution can help resolve this problem:

Windows 95/98/NT4.0/2000

  • Double click on the My Computer icon.
  • Double click on Control Panel
  • Double click on the icon that says Internet Options
  • Click on the Connections tab
  • Click on the Settings button
  • To the right of the Password field, click on Advanced
  • Uncheck the option that says "Disconnect if Idle for 20 Minutes"

IMac

  • Click on the Apple menu
  • Click on Control Panels
  • Click on Remote Access
  • Click on the Options button
  • Click on the Connection tab
  • Uncheck "Disconnect if Idle for 10 Minutes"

11. How do I change my start page?
 

The start page is the first page you see when you start up your Internet application. It is your choice which page you wish to view initially. The following steps will allow you to change your home page.

Internet Explorer

  • Click on Tools
  • Click on Internet Options
  • In the top field type in the address you would like to have for your home page.
  • You can also click on Use Current to use the page you currently have displayed as your start page.

Netscape Navigator

  • Click Edit
  • Click Preferences
  • Click on Navigator
  • Next to Location on the right enter the page you would like to use for your home page.

12. How can I reduce the amount of SPAM I receive?
 

The servers at UIA are programmed to block the most flagrant SPAM servers. However, it is strongly suggested that you download a free spam filter and enable it to filter spam right on your system. Then, you can be more specific and tailor the filter to satisfy your requirements. Click here to go to the spam filter page.

13. Can I update my credit card online?
