Author Event at Feldheym Central LibraryThere will be a free presentation by Eric Shanower, an Eisner award-winning author of the "Age of Bronze" graphic novel series and "Wizard of Oz" graphic novel series, at the Norman F. Feldheym Central Library, Wednesday, October 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Bing Wong Auditorium. Eric Shanower WebsiteThe first 200 attendees will receive a FREE copy of an "Age of Bronze" comic. In 1986 First Comics published "The Enchanted Apples of Oz," the first volume in Shanower's series of graphic novels continuing the "Oz" books by L. Frank Baum. Four more volumes in the series followed, the final one published by Dark Horse Comics in 1992. A collection of all five "Oz" graphic novels, "Adventures in Oz," was issued by IDW Publishing in 2006. After the "Oz" graphic novel series, Eric's "Oz" projects have included writing and illustrating a children's novel "The Giant Garden of Oz" (1993) and a collection of short stories "The Salt Sorcerer of Oz and Other Stories" (2003). In 1991 Eric began research for "Age of Bronze," his comics retelling of the Trojan War legend. "Age of Bronze" began publication from Image Comics in 1998. This retelling of the Trojan War draws upon the long literary and artistic traditions of the Greek myth, beginning with Homer's Iliad, while incorporating archaeological findings from the Aegean Late Bronze Age. "Age of Bronze" has won the Will Eisner Comics Industry Award for Best Writer/Artist in both 2001 and 2003. The second collected volume, "Age of Bronze: Sacrifice," was selected as one of the Best Books of the Year (2004) by the editors of "Publishers Weekly." Eric has published many other projects including "An Accidental Death" and "Prez: Smells Like Teen President" with writer Ed Brubaker, "The Elsewhere Prince" with Moebius (Jean Giraud) and Randy and Jean-Marc Lofficier, "Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor" in which he illustrated Ellison's introductions to comics' adaptations of the writer's stories. In 1994 Shanower founded Hungry Tiger Press with his partner David Maxine and served as co-publisher through 2002. Shanower continues to write and draw "Age of Bronze" as well as illustrate comics, books, and other media. Books will be available for purchase at a book signing following the presentation. Library Cards Available to Foster Children at San Bernardino City LibrariesThe San Bernardino Public Library and the San Bernardino County Department of Children's Services have worked out a unique plan where foster (out-of- home-care) parents can receive special library cards for the children they care for. Children will be encouraged to be responsible and to return all library materials on time. Foster parents don't have to worry about being stuck with huge library bills. The library will forgive overdue fines and the county will pay for missing or unreturned books. The costs of this program are underwritten by the Department of Children's Services (DCS). Therefore only children that are a part of this program are eligible. Foster parents will need to show their agreement for the child to verify that they are eligible for the program. According to Library Director Ophelia Georgiev Roop, "We are pleased to collaborate with the Department of Children's Services so that we can make it easier for foster children to have access to the benefits of a library." For more information, please call 909.381.8201. Volunteers wanted for Arda Haenszel California RoomThe San Bernardino Public Library is seeking volunteers to work in the Arda Haenszel California Room, located on the second floor of the Norman F. Feldheym Central Library. Docents should enjoy history and/or genealogy and enjoy sharing that knowledge with library customers. Docents are needed to work at least once a week for a minimum of three hours. New volunteers will work with a more experienced docent. The Arda Haenszel California Room is a treasure trove of priceless materials about the City of San Bernardino, the County of San Bernardino, the Inland Empire and the state. There is no other facility like ours that maintains such a complete history of our area that includes people, homes, farms, railroads, lakes, springs, businesses, lost buildings, roads, wildlife and fun things to do. There is no librarian assigned to the Arda Haenszel California Room. Budget cuts forced its closing. It is open only when docents are available. Fortunately, there is a group of dedicated volunteers who are truly living treasures and living encyclopedias of this area, but they are looking for people to train. For more information, please call Millicent Price, Principal Librarian at 909.381.8226. |
